As this year’s grassroots season is complete, the commitments are starting to pick up quickly from the 2023 class. One of the latest commitments from Friday was Mekhi Lowery of Oswego East High School and Young & Reckless. The 6’6” senior wing made his verbal commitment to Towson University in Maryland.

Over the past few months, the recruitment of Lowery started to greatly pick up as he grew into one of the more sought after mid-major recruits in all of Illinois’ 2023 class. While he only picked up his first division offer in April, he was still able to get towards double digit offers. Bowling Green, Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois, Oakland, Radford, Southern Indiana, and Valparaiso all offered him a scholarship.

“The coaching staff and players,” was what Lowery mentioned first about what set Towson apart from the other programs that offered him. “You can tell they operate with high energy and are hard workers.” A recent visit to Towson played a big part in winning Lowery over. “The campus and city is beautiful and the visit was great. The coaching staff really took care of me.”

Associate head coach Pat O’Connell was the lead recruiter and Lowery called it a “great relationship” between the two of them. “He really knows what I need to develop and work on as a player, not just my strengths and what I do good.”

“I see myself fitting into their system well,” Lowery said about his future in a Tigers jersey. “They take pride in their defense and that’s something I take pride in as well and they have a versatile offense.”
