Over the course of the weekend there was some thrilling games with plenty of players performing at a high level. Here is the group that shined the most at the Wisconsin Spring Showdown at the 16U level.

Levi Birkholz – 2023 – G – WI Crusaders
Birkholz was key all weekend in leading the Crusaders to the 16U championship crown. He’s a skilled scorer that just makes plays. The 6’3” guard has good strength plus some bounce and scored it very effectively attacking the basket. He moves very well with the ball and is tough to stay in front of. The sophomore also proved to be a tough perimeter defender that is tough to beat off the dribble. One of the better 2023 guards in Wisconsin.

Riley Brooks – 2023 – G – Phenom University
The wing guard has great length and some size in the backcourt at 6’5”. Brooks has a good all-around skill set but makes his biggest impact with his perimeter shooting. He has a smooth stroke and can always get his shot off with his size. The sophomore plays with good energy on the floor as well to having a high IQ.

Tyran Cook – 2023 – G – Team Haliburton
The sophomore is a strong attacking guard that is very tough to defend with the ball. He can overpower opposing guards but also has good moves with the ball to often be getting to the basket. Around the paint he is a very good finisher who can get it done through contact. One of the better drivers at the 16U level there.

Ethan Heck – 2023 – G – WI Crusaders
The 6’4” wing guard put on an impressive performance in the title game to help lead the Crusaders to the victory. Heck is a skilled scorer that got it done getting to the basket with his good moves plus knocked down some key perimeter jumpers with a good-looking shot spotting up. He is a smart guard that knows how to play and uses his size and length effectively over opposing guards.

Arhman Lewis – 2023 – G – Movement Hoops Elite
Lewis a playmaking point guard that is so good with the ball in his hands. With his great quickness and tight handle, he was getting plenty of paint touches to create for himself and his teammates. He scored it well around the paint but also has good vision on the move, plus he also hit some perimeter jumpers.

Bennett McCormick – 2023 – G – JH1 Elite
While McCormick has continued to impress throughout the spring as well as last summer, this weekend he took his game to another level. The tough 6’3” wing guard was just unstoppable at times while attacking the basket. He has some strength and goes so hard to the basket fighting through any contact and finishes at a high rate around the basket even amongst big men. Plus, the sophomore is a more than capable spot up shooter from beyond the arc and plays with great energy to lock down his man defensively.

Simeon Murchison – 2023 – F/C – ABC Young Lions
Murchison is a big 6’9” post with some length and a solid build. He greatly impressed with his scoring ability with some nice strong moves posting up, hitting some mid-range jumpers, and attacking the basket off the dribble. He plays with good energy on the defensive end to lock down the paint. Plenty of upside for the 2023 big man.

Matt Schmainda – 2023 – G – WI Swing
Schmainda had one of the more impressive weekends to help his team reach the 16U title game. He is a smart guard that plays with good energy and is just a winning player that makes plays. Throughout the weekend he shot the ball exceptionally well spotting up from three but can also play with the ball in his hands and is a good passer. He is a tough defender that really works on that side of the ball.

Mauryoun Turner – 2023 – G – Cream City Chosen
A lengthy 6’3” wing guard that showed off some good skills and contributed in a number of ways. Turner is a gifted scorer that was getting it done on all three levels. He plays well with the ball as he can quickly rise up off the dribble to hit shots with range but can also get by defenders with his quickness.

Jamison Young – 2023 – PG – World Hoops Elite
A true breakout spring for Young who continues to show he is one of the top 2023 point guards in Wisconsin. He is a skilled and elusive point guard with tight handle and great moves that is incredibly tough to defend off the dribble. Young is always getting into the paint to score plus distribute it out with a great passing ability. While he did much of his scoring on his drives, he can also shoot the ball from the perimeter.
